Devil's Head, while a beautiful natural landscape in its own right, is constantly under improvements through the efforts of the Friends of Devil's Head and the City of Calais, in coordination with various local organizations including Washington County Community College. This page details the projects that are now in progress.
Stairway to the Shore
The granite steps leading to the beach at Devil's Head have been crumbling and eroding as a result of natural forces. The Friends of Devil's Head are working to install new granite steps that will be even and stable, enabling beach access for all visitors. The City of Calais has come forward with a donation of granite curbing that we believe can be used for the task, and they have offered to deliver it to the site itself for volunteers to move and install the steps. At the base of the stone steps, a removable wooden set will be built with added handrails to provide direct beach access.

Improving the Picnic Area
Devil's Head offers multiple natural locations that are suitable for a picnic. As of today (summer 2017), the picnic spots are not yet improved, meaning visitors will need to picnic on the ground or in their vehicles. Efforts are now underway to construct aesthetically appropriate sitting area to enable visitors to comfortably enjoy a snack or meal or to simply sit and appreciate their surroundings.

Building an Observation Platform
At 340', Devil's Head is the second-highest peak on the Eastern seaboard (the first is Mount Cadillac in Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor). Despite its height, the view of the river and the surrounding area is obscured by the enthusiastically growing trees. Rather than cutting down a hundred or more trees to enhance the view, the Friends of Devil's Head are working toward building an observation platform at the summit of the main trail. When it's complete, we hope to be able to provide visitors with a commanding view of the St. Croix River and the St. Croix Island.
